During the Easter holiday on 30 March – 1 April, Hong Kong Ballet hosted over 160 enthusiastic young dancers (ages 4-10) for its popular three-day Ballet Theatre Camp: Alice (in wonderland) at Hong Kong Cultural Centre. No previous ballet experience was required in order to participate.

Four groups of children experienced various elements of ballet productions like stories, music and props in a fun, interactive environment. In addition to learning ballet movements, they closely examined intricate ballet costumes and headdresses used onstage and used them as inspiration to create their own headdresses, props and sets. These included hats, rabbit ears, flamingo headpieces, playing cards and dance sticks, which were all featured in the Dance Demonstration on last day of camp.

The students worked hard to learn choreography especially created for them by Company dancers to music from ALICE (in wonderland). Their hard work and efforts paid off, and the final performances were extremely well received by their parents, who were eager to see what their children had learnt. Afterwards, group photos were taken and students received certificates from Company dancers for their participation and completion of Ballet Theatre Camp: Alice (in wonderland)

Special thanks goes to the following professionals and Company dancers for their time and hard work. Their patient and caring teaching showed their passion for sharing their knowledge and experience with the next generation. These individuals include: Hong Kong Ballet dancers CHENG Hei Lam Michelle, LEUNG Saulong; former Hong Kong Ballet dancer Irene Kam; Education and Community Outreach Department Manager Vency Kwok, music instructor Patrick Ng, props and sets Instructor Aya Mok and the costume instructor Jerman Chu.

Overall, the students had a meaningful Easter holiday experience learning more about the world of ballet – from dance movements, story, music and costumes and to sets and props.

We look forward to seeing them again at future Hong Kong Ballet activities!
